The Hatter is much more in this film than in Wonderland, yes he is still Mad as in bonkers but he is also Mad as in angry. She is told that she needs to talk with Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) to help her go back into time to find the Hatter’s family. The premise of the movie is simple, the Hatter believes that his family, of whom he once told Alice, had died, are alive and well and asks Alice to help find them. I loved seeing them all again, I love them all but especially the Cheshire cat and Dormouse, those two are my favorites. Once back on Underland she meets some familiar faces like Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, and the Dormouse. I have to admit that upon hearing him speak I got chills.
Pretty soon she is lead back to to the land of whimsy by no other than Alan Rickman who is the voice of Absalom, the caterpillar who is now a beautiful blue butterfly.
She is headstrong and doesn’t take nonsense from anyone (and as you will see, a very f\different Alice than in the first film). The movie starts with Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) on her father’s ship as the ship’s Captain. This film stands on its own and delivers a fun and exciting adventure. (This one pulls off the dubious trick of being jokey without being funny.I had the pleasure of attending the Alice Through The Looking Glass press event back in May of this year, so I was able to see the movie and interview some of the cast. The good news is that Mia Wasikowska is back in the title role, bright-spirited and skillful as ever, but she’s burdened by the manic direction of James Bobin, working from a dramatically inert script by Ms. This carnival of excessive decoration and frenetic behavior comes six years after Disney’s hugely profitable “Alice In Wonderland,” a live-action, visually ornate and dramatically bland production that Tim Burton directed from a script by Linda Woolverton. A better title might be “Alice Through the Funhouse Mirror,” though there’s little fun on the other side.
Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” carries the title it does for obvious reasons that include marketing, a lingering debt to Lewis Carroll and marketing.
